Workcel vs Excel for inventory management in Bangladesh

Most Bangladesh businesses that later buy ERP did not start with ERP. They started with Excel, and Excel worked until the second outlet, the second person editing the file, or the first time two cashiers sold the last piece at the same time.

This is not a sermon against spreadsheets. It is a map of where they stop being inventory.

Excel wins when one person owns the file

If you have one godown, one person who types receipts, and sales that wait until that person updates the sheet, Excel is cheaper and clearer than software you will not use.

The moment two people edit stock at once-or a cashier needs the number while the buyer is still in Google Drive-you no longer have a stock book. You have a conflict.

One company total is not stock control

A sheet with a column called Quantity tells you how many you own. It does not tell you how many are in Mirpur versus the warehouse.

Workcel holds quantity per location and binds each POS station to the location it actually sells from. Excel can imitate that with more tabs. Those tabs diverge within a week.

Transfers need a document, not a cell edit

Moving 40 pieces from the warehouse to a shop is not a subtract-and-add in two rows. It is a transfer with a reason, so you can see goods in transit instead of a mysterious hole.

In Excel the in-transit state is usually 'I think Rafi took them in the van.' That sentence does not survive a stock count.

The till cannot wait for the spreadsheet

A register that sells from last night's exported sheet will oversell by lunch. Live stock at the counter is the actual difference, not prettier charts.

Workcel POS sells from the station's location. Excel becomes inventory software only if someone is employed to be the API.

Counts expose the drift

An annual Excel count that you type back into the same sheet teaches you nothing about which outlet drifted. Count small, per location, and record the variance.

If your process is 'fix the yellow cells until the total looks right,' you are editing a story, not counting stock.

When to stay on Excel

Stay if you have one location, one editor, and no POS that needs the number in the next ten seconds. Switching for fashion is how software ends up unused.

Move when a second outlet, a second cashier, or baaki plus stock in the same business means the sheet is a bottleneck. Workcel fits that kind of Bangladesh business; it isn't meant to replace every spreadsheet in the company on day one.
